Updating a ceiling fan silver surfers dating
While I had the sander, I sanded off the finish and prepped it for a new one! You can use a traditional stain, or you can use a stain/poly blend.
If you feel like you need a little more direction, here is another tutorial where I showed how to refinish a light fixture . I don’t know about you, but I think it was a night and day difference, once I swapped out the shades.
I used Rust-o-leum’s Silver hammered look spray paint because I wanted to keep it light and not draw the eye up. I sprayed using short strokes, while trying just to get everything covered but not force the spray paint incase it went where it shouldn’t go.
I then spray painted the parts that attached to the blades and also the screws that hold in the light globes the same silver. It only cost me for the spray paint and a little sweat since I decided to do this on a 90 degree day! *Update: A lot of question about whether it affected the motor at all, and it didn’t.
One of the reasons we bought this house was an amazing sunroom off of the kitchen/dining room.
But it looked like it was out of an 90’s issue of DIY Home, especially the ceiling fan.
We confirmed quickly that a ceiling fan was necessary in this space to take the cool lake air from off the Screened In Porch and circulate it through the rest of the cabin. Alright, that's admittedly not a great image of the fan, but I was so quick to take this baby apart, that's the only photo I found with it all intact.
Who knew one could have such contrasting interests? (Unfortunately, all fans are going to vary slightly, so I can’t help much with that part.) Once the fan was down, I decided to remove, and refinish the blades first. The one suggestion I would strongly caution is take pictures of the process! Once disassembled I used a foam sand block to scuff up all the metal pieces. I had to disassemble the entire fan in order to refinish it.Once all pieces are dry, it was time to re-assemble. Now might be an ideal time to pull out the pictures of the disassemble process. This one simple change drastically improved the whole fan.
There's nothing that says rustic lodge about these guys.
